In combination with global climate targets to substantially reduce CO2 emissions, countries all around the world are rethinking their energy sources, dependencies and security of supply. This is placing a great deal of focus on the energy sector. In the international sphere, hydrogen has attracted considerable attention as an alternative energy source. Green hydrogen is perceived as the crude oil of tomorrow. This flexible energy source is an indispensable asset for the energy revolution and will open a new market in the energy sector. GEMÜ is striving to establish itself as a valve manufacturer in the growing hydrogen production and transformation (Power-to-X) market.

As a medium, Hydrogen sets high demands on valves used in the application. Especially the small molecule size of the volatile gas quickly becomes a challenge when selecting materials. Hydrogen embrittlement, tightness, explosive atmosphere and decentralised installations are vital parameters to be considered when selecting the right valves for the application.

Hydrogen shows a high diffusion in many materials, in some alloys this can lead to hydrogen embrittlement at high temperatures. Therefore, austenitic stainless steels are a preferred material. At GEMÜ, we carefully advise you on the choice of material, especially for parts in contact with the medium. Thanks to our comprehensive range of products, we can offer valves and seals that are suitable for use with up to 100% hydrogen.

Hydrogen is the element with the smallest molecular size, and for this reason, the tightness of the entire valve becomes an important parameter in hydrogen applications. GEMÜ valves are tested for leak tightness for fugitive emissions according to DIN EN ISO 15848-1 (TA-Luft). Additional testing via a helium test rig is possible if required.

Further to this, hydrogen can form explosive mixtures and the systems are often installed in areas with high safety requirements. With our tried and tested extensive product range, GEMÜ can offer selections of valves specifically designed for use in ATEX zones for handling flammable gases. Moreover, electrically operated valves with corresponding safety positions are also available as options to meet the plant’s requirements. This is beneficial for the decentralised installation of hydrogen electrolysers, where compressed air is often not available on site.

With our comprehensive range of products, GEMÜ can provide solutions from a single source, allowing us to be flexible in meeting your individual requirements. Our valves, measurement and control systems meet standards required for processes in hydrogen production, from water treatment, electrolysis, gas treatment, Power-to-Liquid and other supporting processes. Please contact us for further information on how we can support your future projects and process requirements.
