Hot Spot Three IEC 60534 Control Valve Standards to be Revised

What is it?

During a recent IEC TC65B Working Group 9 meeting it was decided that three of the important IEC 60534 series of control valve standards should be revised as follows:

IEC 60534-2-1 2011 Flow capacity - Sizing equations for fluid flow under installed conditions
IEC 60534-8-3 2010 Noise considerations - Control valve aerodynamic noise prediction method
IEC 60534-8-4 2015 Noise considerations - Prediction of noise generated by hydrodynamic flow

IEC TC65B WG9 are currently discussing changes to these standards covering aspects such as updated sizing equations for transitional flow above a Reynolds Number of 10, pipeline noise transmission loss equations and changes including revised definitions to hydrodynamic noise prediction techniques.

These changes may be of interest to control valve members as they have the potential to affect current sizing methods and product technical specifications when implemented. This work will be shadowed by the BVAA Control Valve TEG at ballot stages however, any members who would like to contribute directly to the work of IEC TC65B WG9 should initially contact the BVAA secretariat to register their interest.

Why is it Important?

The IEC 60534 series are also published as BS EN standards and cover a wide range of control valve related technologies that are frequently used to size, select and test products to ensure they are suitable for any given applications. Revisions to these standards may have a significant effect on valve sizing and selection and the competitiveness of new and existing trim designs.
Involvement in the development of these fundamental technical standards is an opportunity for BVAA control valve members to both influence the future direction of control valve technology and develop their technical understanding of the subject.

Continuous Improvement - Did we miss anything?

Hot Spots are intended to alert members and provide a brief overview of new standards, activities or procedures that are being introduced in the industry. If there is key information missing that would be helpful, please let us know so that we can improve our future service.

Please Note: This Hotspot is for information purposes, and we invite comments from BVAA members only. Please also note that at time of publication ballots may be closed. For more information, please contact the Secretariat.

BVAA Members: Did you know we have a hotspot tab on the BVAA website? Head over to www.bvaa.org.uk/login-here.asp and log into the member only area. You then need to select ‘Hotspots’ for the latest. For information on how to access the member only area of the website please contact jane@bvaa.org.uk
