Advanced Valve Solutions - energy from waste plant project

Design
Recently AVS started working with the main contractor for the build of this brand-new Waste From Energy plant supplying a major European city. Included in the scope of supply were all the control and isolation valves for the turbine hall (balance of plant) including:

• HP bypass valves
• HP main steam stop valves
• Steam turbine quick closing valve
• Hydraulic actuators and power packs
• Safety valves and silencers

Knowledge base
Throughout the design, ordering and commissioning of the plant, AVS was the knowledge base for all aspects of the valve design, installation and performance.

As well as supplying all the hardware AVS wrote the functional description for the control valves, HP bypass valves and the hydraulic units.

During the preliminary stages of the project, AVS supported the main contactor in the design of the steam turbine systems, processes, piping route, valve selection and planning.

Our team of engineers met every challenge that was put to them to provide a comprehensive list of correctly selected and optimized equipment to fulfil the function required.

Installation
In total the supply was for 2,907 line items, staged in 70 part deliveries to suit the fabrication schedule. As with all large projects, the original specifications were modified during the build stage and AVS were on hand to provide advice and flexibility in the supply process.

Some of the elements of the engineering design were still outstanding at the beginning of the build.

This necessitated many valve modifications, all of which were done in a timely and cost-effective manner, and importantly within timescales.

Commissioning
AVS provided support during commissioning and advised on further minor modifications. The supplier of the DCS system was supported with functional descriptions of the hydraulic units and actuators and assisted with the correct programming of the DCS. During hot commissioning, AVS were on standby to solve any unforeseen valve problems.

The biggest valve issue was the repair and modification of the steam turbine quick closing valves.

AVS supported the main contractor from quotation to final hand-over for all the critical application valves and hundreds of secondary valves. Many design issues were solved, both large and small, and incomplete engineering designs were made functional and comprehensive.
