Model 312R2 30 and 50bar regulators for the University of Glasgow

Model 312R2 30 and 50bar regulators for the University of Glasgow

The University of Glasgow has long been known for rocket engine research and development and as shown in the pictures here, they have recently successfully test fired a new rocket motor on their testing rig.

When contacted by a Rocket Propulsion Researcher from the University to provide 30bar liquid propane pressure regulators for a new engine test programme, MMC quickly understood their requirements and proposed a solution that delivered the flow capacity and pressure safety margins needed for the project.

In order to deliver the testing required, the management of fuel pressures up to 50bar was crucial and four 312R2 pressure regulators were proposed along with two BX315 50bar normally closed solenoid valves.

The pressure regulators are shielded from the test cell and include two 50bar nitrogen regulators, a 50bar oxygen regulator and a 30bar regulator for the liquid propane. The nitrogen regulators are part of the fuelling system to overpressurise the propane to achieve the needed combustion pressures. The 312R2 model was selected as it was available with a 60bar inlet rating, very competitively priced against the customer suggested R31000 model and offering a higher flow capacity.

These regulators are normally mounted vertically with the adjuster at the top and fitted with a back entry pressure gauge. Since the preliminary design had been based on the higher pressure R31000 model, the 312R2 units were supplied with bottom threaded gauges so that the adjusters could face the operator and have the gauges ideally placed on top for monitoring.

The feedback received from the University of Glasgow has been incredibly positive and Measure Monitor Control was very pleased to have been able to assist them to deliver on their research programme.
