Hot Spot CE marking in GB extended indefinitely

What is it?

On 1st August 2023 the Department for Business and Trade announced an indefinite extension to the use of CE marking for UK businesses UK Government announces extension of CE mark recognition for businesses - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

This means that BVAA members will now be able to demonstrate that their products conform with UK regulations such as the Pressure Equipment Safety Regulation (PE(S)R) by continuing to apply the CE mark indefinitely. Prior to the announcement, the CE mark could only be used to indicate conformance to market regulations in Great Britain until 31st December 2024, with UKCA approval being required to place products on the market after this date.

Why is it Important?

This latest change means that the mandatory use of the UKCA mark will no longer be required and businesses will be able to continue to use their previous CE approved conformity assessment processes for the foreseeable future. This effectively ends the requirement to duplicate product certification in order to place the same product on the market in both Great Britain and Europe from 1st January 2025.

In the announcement Business Minister Kevin Hollinrake recognised that, following extensive engagement with industry, the major reason for dropping the deadline for mandatory UKCA marking was to cut business costs and time required to place products on the market.

This is a welcome change for many BVAA members who will now avoid the transition costs associated with the mandatory introduction of UKCA marking. This outcome follows a lengthy period of consultation and lobbying of the UK Government by many industry bodies such as the BVAA.
