Hot Spot EN19:2023 – Marking of Metallic Valves Published

What is it?

A new revision of EN19 Marking of metallic valves has been published by CEN and supersedes the 2016 edition. This important basic valve standard specifies the requirements for marking and labelling of industrial metallic valves and should be used alongside the labelling provisions specified in the relevant product standard.

The main revisions to this harmonised standard have been made by CEN at the request of the European Commission to ensure that the standard more precisely defines the relationship with EU legislation such as the Pressure Equipment Directive.

Why is it Important?

The correct marking of metallic valves is a fundamental requirement to ensure that the valve user is adequately informed of the allowable safe pressure and temperature limitations of the equipment to permit safe operation.

EN19:2023 is a harmonised European standard containing an Annex ZA that defines the relationship between the standard and the essential safety requirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive and the new revision contains several changes to Annex ZA in order to more precisely define this relationship. Therefore, it is recommended that all valve manufacturers who CE mark products review their current marking practices to confirm that they are compliant with the new edition of this standard.

BVAA members that are UKCA marking their products should also note that this standard has been published as a BS EN standard and therefore it is also likely to become a designated standard for compliance with the requirements of the UK Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations in the next few weeks.
