Rotork supports Bath University to develop a record-breaking hydrogen-powered car

Rotork is excited to announce its support of Bath University in the development of a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine (ICE) car capable of breaking the land speed record. This project is one of several initiatives that Rotork is supporting the University of Bath with. Rotork’s Manchester team has played a crucial role in supplying Bifold two-way and three-way solenoid valves that will be critical components of the car’s safety system.

The project aims to achieve a fully functional hydrogen-powered ICE car by 2024, with a three-phase development schedule from February 2023 to May 2024. This groundbreaking initiative represents a significant step towards establishing hydrogen as a sustainable alternative to traditional ICE technology.

The supplied solenoid valves, specifically selected for their ability to operate under high pressure and conform to ATEX IIC explosionproof standards, will safeguard the car during critical safety shutdown and excess hydrogen venting procedures. These valves are essential for ensuring the car’s safety and reliability while pushing the boundaries of hydrogen-powered ICE performance.

The land speed record attempt forms part of a broader research project at Bath University exploring hydrogen’s potential in transportation. The project’s objectives include turbocharging the engine, developing a custom-built chassis, and targeting longer-distance records.
