Howco Group on Track To Support Young Engineers for 10th Successive Year

Howco, the global distributor and processor of high-performance alloys with extensive manufacturing and engineering capabilities will help the University of Glasgow’s talented student racing team stay on track for yet another championship title in 2024.

The upcoming grassroots motorsport season will mark the 10th successive year that Howco has lent its support to the talented amateur racers, designers and engineers. In 2022, the University of Glasgow crew took home the hotly contested Formula Student title, at Silverstone, the home of British motorsport.

The Formula Student competition is a five-day event held annually. It has static (engineering design, cost & manufacturing, business plan) and dynamic events (sprint, acceleration, skid pad, along with an endurance component). The University of Glasgow students emerged victorious after completing a challenging 22 lap run of a 1km course at Copse Corner.

Last year, the young team took on its most ambitious project to date. It raced headfirst into a combustion-less new era by designing, building and fielding an electric car for the first time.

Despite being newcomers, the team technical prowess saw the University of Glasgow students achieve success in July, when they were crowned the Formula Student SIM Racing Series champions.

Head of Mechanical Systems Lucas Blair explains, The SIM Racing Series consists of online simulated races throughout the year. It was a great win by the team. Despite the technical challenges of building an electric car for the first time, we still managed to take home three trophies in 2023 and came 3rd in the static events. This really shows our continual pursuit for success despite the car not being where we wanted it to be by last year’s competition.”

The students are on track to repeat that success in 2024, with its capable team of engineers set to pour all of their on-track experience into the creation of a new and even more competitive car later this year.

Howco, which has sites in Scotland, has been a longstanding partner. It has worked closely with the University since 2014 to help its engineering students refine their skills and live their passion for racing on tracks around Britain.
