James Walker’s new packing product offers ‘future-ready’ performance

Sealing specialist James Walker has released a new valve stem fugitive emissions product offering ‘future-ready’ qualification standards and emissions performance.

The new packing combination set has been developed specifically to exceed the requirements of all current fugitive emissions standards to provide a product that valve OEMs can specify in valve designs today, safe in the knowledge that their design will meet performance requirements well into the future.

Qualified to the latest API 622, 3rd edition including Annex-C (HT) 2022 through testing carried out by Yarmouth Research and Technology, USA, Supagraf 100FXI CS achieved ultra-low fugitive emissions levels of 10-12 ppm over 1510 cycles with no loss of torque and no adjustment required at any point in the test.

The packing set is also certified Fire Safe to API 607, 8th edition with zero leakage during and after fire and has qualified to API 624, 2nd edition including Annex D (HT), API 642, 2nd edition including Annex-C (HT) and ISO 15848 standard up to 400°C.

“Emissions regulations are guaranteed to become ever more stringent, particularly with initiatives such as the global methane emissions reduction pledge to reduce methane emissions by at least 30% below 2020 levels by 2030, but by specifying Supagraf 100FXI CS you are working with emissions levels as low as 10-12 ppm, which not only easily meet the qualification levels for the latest API 624 and 641 valve certifications, they will conform to regulations for many future revisions.” Comments product manager Rajib Roy.

“Throughout the development of this new packing we also paid extraordinary attention on minimising friction, which is particularly challenging when you are also trying to achieve low emission performance in high endurance conditions. The fact that we have succeeded in creating an ultra-low friction product brings benefits for the valve OEMs in terms of both reduced valve stem wear, which aids extended product life, and reduced actuation force requirements allowing the use of smaller actuators, saving space, weight and cost for the overall valve and actuator package.”

Probably the biggest advantage for valve manufacturers is that James Walker technical services can be provide in combination with Supagraf 100FXI CS to support most valve types in achieving fugitive emissions performance to the latest API 624 or 641 including Annex-D or Annex-C (HT) or ISO 15848 spec. at the first attempt, with excellent results – a major help in delivering projects on time and avoiding costly requalification testing.
