Langley Alloys: Ferralium® 255 for Fertiliser Production!

With increasing global demands for artificial nitrogen based fertilizer, process plant manufacturers need to find long term economically viable solutions for handling substances such as sulphuric acid and phosphoric acids and urea. 

Fertilizers derived from urea synthesis account for approximately 50% of world nitrogen fertilizer production and processing is a highly corrosive, high temperature (both exothermic and endothermic) high-pressure environment procedure requiring containment in highly corrosion resistant materials throughout. 

As mills and manufacturers have developed materials (which are readily produced in tubular form for process pipe) and products such as valves and pool condenser technology for the safe processing of urea, Langley Alloys continued with their strategy of investing in highly specified and rigorously tested corrosion resistant alloys such as Ferralium 255 which meet the demands of critical applications. 

Langley Alloys’ Ferralium 255 (S32550) is a hot worked, annealed, super duplex stainless steel NACE MR0175 alloyed with 2% copper and is resistant to a wide variety of corrosive mediums including those present during the processing of urea. In bar form it has a yield strength of 85ksi. 

In urea fertiliser processing environments, Ferralium offers:

- Corrosion resistance in urea containing environments

- Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking

- Low levels of sulphur reduces the potential for pitting corrosion

- Excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion

- High mechanical properties allowing lighter weight components

- Suitability for larger components due to reduced possibility of sigma phase formation

- Good weldability
