Engineering Certainty: The ROSS H L O X® Series and the Future of Hydraulic Energy Isolation

In today’s industrial landscape, hydraulic systems are operating at higher pressures, higher speeds, and with greater force densities than ever before. As these systems evolve, so too does the need for reliable hydraulic energy isolation—an essential safeguard for maintenance technicians and plant operators who work around stored hydraulic energy every day. The importance of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) compliance has never been clearer, as organisations prioritise safety, uptime, and regulatory alignment.
The ROSS H L‑O‑X® Series represents a new generation of hydraulic lockout valves, purpose‑built to make hydraulic energy isolation safer, more consistent, and easier to verify. Unlike general‑purpose shut‑off valves, H L‑O‑X® is engineered specifically as an energy‑isolation device, designed to support the requirements of OSHA, ISO, ANSI, and CSA LOTO frameworks.
At the centre of its design is a lockable‑OFF‑only mechanism, ensuring the valve can only be padlocked when the hydraulic supply is genuinely blocked and downstream energy is being exhausted. With a simple 90° counter‑clockwise handle rotation, the valve simultaneously isolates inlet flow and vents downstream lines to tank - removing harmful stored energy more reliably than standard valves that only block flow.
Each valve is equipped with an integrated pressure gauge at Port A, giving technicians clear visual confirmation that pressure has been fully relieved before maintenance begins. This built‑in verification step reduces reliance on external test points and supports best‑practice LOTO routines.
What sets H L‑O‑X® apart is its open‑transition architecture, using a ROSS‑engineered trunnion design that bleeds both P and A ports to tank during the transition. This reduces the risk of pump dead‑heading, minimises hydraulic shock, and improves system protection during isolation and restart cycles. Full‑flow T1 and T2 tank ports ensure rapid depressurisation and controlled bypass of pump flow.
Built for industrial durability, the series features cast‑steel bodies, carbon‑steel internals, and Delrin ball seals for smooth operation and long service life. Available in ½″, ¾″, and 1¼″ sizes with flows up to 50 GPM and operating pressures up to 6,000 psi, H L‑O‑X® integrates easily into both new system designs and retrofit applications. Standard SAE‑ORB ports and optional Code 62 flange kits ensure compatibility across a wide range of hydraulic architectures.
As hydraulic systems continue to advance, the ROSS H L‑O‑X® Series sets a new benchmark for engineered confidence - bringing together safety, performance, and verification in one dependable solution.
