The hydrogen economy is rewriting valve material selection

Hydrogen is reshaping material selection across the valve industry. As electrolysers, refuelling stations and storage systems scale up, design engineers face a problem that carbon steel is poorly suited to solve: hydrogen embrittlement. When hydrogen atoms diffuse into a metal, they reduce its ductility and fracture resistance, and the risk rises with pressure. Refuelling and storage systems running at 350 to 700 bar leave little margin for the wrong material choice, which becomes a safety issue rather than just a cost one.
This is where corrosion-resistant alloys earn their place, though selection is not straightforward. Austenitic stainless steels are generally the most compatible with hydrogen, and high-nickel grades perform better still, since nickel stabilises the microstructure against embrittlement. Duplex and super duplex stainless steels bring high strength and excellent chloride resistance, but their use in hydrogen service demands care: the ferritic phase is more sensitive to hydrogen, so grade, condition and design stress all matter. Nickel alloys such as the Inconel and Monel families are long established where high pressure and aggressive media combine most severely.
The same properties suit the markets growing alongside hydrogen: desalination, offshore, chemical processing and sour service, all moving from standard stainless to higher alloys. In H2S-containing environments, ISO 15156 governs material selection precisely because hydrogen-related cracking is so damaging.
Specification detail matters. Cold work, surface condition and metallurgical defects all affect how an alloy behaves once hydrogen is present, so material from a traceable, certified source is essential. Dual certification and full traceability are no longer a nice-to-have for valve bodies, stems and trim destined for hydrogen or sour service.
For valve makers, the practical challenge is securing the right grade, in the right size, without long lead times on exotic material.
