Same Space, Different Result: Why Energising Spring Geometry Matters in Valve Sealing

When specifying an energising spring for the seal needed in a valve or actuator, the available space can often be the key factor. But should it be?
Different springs can behave very differently, even if they both fit in the same space. It’s the geometry behind the springs that’s key to making the right choice. A spring’s geometry will influence the force it provides, how that force changes as the spring is compressed and how much movement the spring can accommodate.
At Clifford Springs, we would aways suggest that the key question isn't, "Which spring will fit best in the space?" It's "What does the spring need to achieve within the seal?"
The load and deflection characteristics of an energising spring will influence sealing force, friction, wear and operating torque. Effectively balancing these characteristics helps achieve the required performance throughout the intended working range of the seal.
Different spring geometries achieve this in different ways.
Helical springs can provide relatively high loads within a compact space, making them suitable where greater energising force is required.
Meander springs offer greater working deflection, allowing them to accommodate more movement and making them particularly useful where wear compensation is important.
Canted coil springs provide a relatively consistent force across their working deflection. This makes them valuable in applications where controlled force is important, including many demanding dynamic sealing applications.
Garter springs remain a proven and economical solution for many radial sealing applications where their load and deflection characteristics meet the requirements.
The most appropriate option therefore depends on what the spring needs to do, rather than simply the space it needs to fit into.
As a seal experiences movement, wear and changing operating conditions throughout its service life, the energising spring continues to provide the mechanical force that helps maintain contact. Its working deflection and force characteristics are as important as its physical dimensions, helping maximise service life and long-term reliability.
