Connexion Developments: High Pressure Meets Cryogenic

Controlling fluids at very high pressures presents significant challenges for valve designers, particularly when the same application may also involve extremely low media temperatures.

A new 316L stainless steel solenoid valve range from Connexion Developments combines operating pressures of up to 400 bar with media temperatures down to -196°C, providing an electrically operated solution for demanding high-pressure and cryogenic fluid applications.

The CNXSPE series uses a 2/2 way pressure-assisted design and is available in both normally closed and normally open configurations. Sizes range from 3/8" to 2" BSP, with NPT connections also available.

The smaller DN12 to DN25 versions, covering 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" and 1" connections, are rated from 10 to 400 bar. Larger DN40 and DN50 versions provide 1 1/2" and 2" connections with operating pressures from 10 to 200 bar. Flow factors range from Kv 35 L/min through to Kv 750 L/min, allowing the same valve family to cover substantially different flow requirements.

Of particular interest for specialist applications is the wide media temperature capability. The standard technical specification covers media temperatures from -196°C to +150°C, making the valves suitable for cryogenic fluids as well as gases, air, water and other compatible media.

Valve bodies are manufactured from 316L stainless steel, with PEEK gaskets and a choice of FKM, NBR, EPDM or optional PTFE O-rings. Standard solenoid coils are Class H rated with IP65 protection, while alternative ATEX coil systems are available for hazardous-area applications.

A lightweight version has also been developed specifically for the aerospace industry. This option reduces valve weight where mass is a critical consideration while retaining the high-pressure capability required by the application.

Combining high pressure, cryogenic temperature capability and relatively large nominal bore sizes within a solenoid-operated valve creates opportunities in applications where conventional industrial solenoid valves are unsuitable.
