How SWIVADAPT® and SWIVEMAS® Work

Anyone who has bolted a pressure gauge onto a pipe run knows the small but persistent annoyance of thread timing: the fitting seats up tight, but the dial ends up facing a wall, or the valve handle lands somewhere awkward to reach. With a conventional rigid thread, there's no fixing that without adding extra fittings or accepting a poor layout. Stewarts built its SWIVADAPT® coupling range to remove that constraint entirely, so gauges, valves, and accessories can be mounted at whatever angle suits the installation.

Two versions of the joint are available. The Mark-1 is the base SWIVADAPT® design. The Mark-2, marketed as SWIVEMAS®, carries everything the Mark-1 does plus a second, backup seal sitting behind the primary one. That extra seal serves two purposes at once: it lowers the risk of fugitive emissions escaping the joint, and it acts as a fallback if the main seal is ever damaged or degrades over time - useful wherever a leak has real consequences, whether from a safety or environmental standpoint.

What enables the free rotation is a small mechanical detail: the drive nut on the instrument or adapter socket isn't fixed rigidly to the thread it floats. That means an installer can turn the fitting to the exact angle they need, through the full 360° range, before the connection is ever tightened. Only once the orientation is set does turning the nut apply an axial force through the collar, pressing the two cone-shaped faces together to form a metal-on-metal seal. The sequence, position first and seal second, is what makes the joint useful in practice: nobody must choose between a correctly aligned instrument and a properly sealed one.

Instrument orientation is the main use case, but it isn't the only one. Stewarts also supplies these connectors for linking differential pressure instruments, where two separate take-off points need to be joined cleanly, and for building high-integrity threaded joints into other equipment in situations where a somewhat narrower bore is acceptable.

In practice, SWIVADAPT® and SWIVEMAS® solve a problem that's easy to overlook until you're the one installing the equipment - getting a tight seal and a sensible orientation shouldn't be mutually exclusive. SWIVEMAS® simply takes that same solution further, adding a layer of redundancy for applications where a single seal isn't reassurance enough.
