Vision Engineering: When a Slot Becomes a Single Point of Light

A UK manufacturer of hydraulic filtration and contamination control equipment ran into a measurement problem on a new valve assembly project. One optical component had a slot cut into its coating, so small that to the naked eye it looked like a single pin dot of light. Its rectangular shape was unrecognisable without magnification, and the part's tolerances left no room for guesswork.
Several microscopes and optical devices were tried. None gave the edge recognition, magnification, or image contrast needed to measure the slot properly, let alone repeat that measurement across a full production batch.
Vision Engineering’s Swift PRO Duo, a non-contact optical measurement system, resolved the slot into a sharp, measurable rectangle. Its dual-mode measurement tools let the team check dimensions on screen, without touching the part.
Inspection time for a batch of 50 components dropped from more than a day to around an hour. Accuracy held across the whole batch, run after run.
"It does exactly what it says on the tin," the company's metrologist said. "We get sharp, reliable images and the measurements we need, batch after batch."
Features on valve and fluid power components keep shrinking, and tolerances keep tightening. This is one example of inspection equipment keeping pace, turning a feature invisible to the naked eye into something fast and repeatable to check.
