Langley Alloys Moves Alloy K500 to Electro Slag Refining
Cleaner Melt, Fewer Stuck Valves

A valve stem rarely fails because of what's written on the material certificate. More often it fails because of what's hiding inside the microstructure: non-metallic inclusions left over from melting, sitting quietly as the starting point for a fatigue crack after years of cyclic actuation. It's a problem Langley Alloys has moved to address directly, switching its Alloy K500 production onto Electro Slag Refining (ESR).
Alloy K500 (UNS N05500) has long been a go-to stem material for valve manufacturers working in seawater, sour gas and other aggressive environments. Its precipitation-hardened strength and hardness resist galling and thread damage during actuation, the kind of wear that causes a valve to stick rather than fail outright, which is often worse. Grades and heat-treatment condition of K500 are qualified for sour service under NACE MR0175/ISO 15156, so manufacturers specifying it for sour duty should confirm the exact condition supplied meets the hardness limits their application requires.
ESR is a secondary melting process: the alloy is re-melted through a slag bath, which strips out more of the inclusions that a single melt leaves behind. Langley says the result is a cleaner microstructure and tighter batch-to-batch consistency, the difference that shows up not on the datasheet but at the machine, in fewer NDT rejections, and later, in service life.
The move sits within Langley's wider nickel alloy range, including 718, 625, 725, 825 and 925, alongside its duplex and super duplex stainless steel stock. The company has supplied corrosion-resistant alloys to the offshore and petrochemical sectors since the 1930s, and holds the original patent for Ferralium 255, the first commercial super duplex stainless steel.
For valve manufacturers, the practical question isn't whether K500 is the right alloy, that's usually already decided, it's whether the bar arriving on the shop floor is consistent enough to avoid surprises downstream. ESR-produced K500 is now available through Langley's stockholding network, alongside its wider duplex, super duplex and nickel alloy range for stem, trim and body components.
