Offshore Stainless extends size range of Cold-Drawn bar

For larger Valve Stems and Spindles - bigger size, better finish

Heavier valve designs need heavier stems and spindles, and sourcing corrosion-resistant bar above 2.5 inches diameter with the tolerance and finish to go straight to machining, has not always been straightforward. Offshore Stainless & Alloys (OSS), based in Brownhills, Walsall, is the only UK producer able to cold draw stainless steel, Duplex, Super Duplex and Nickel alloy bar above 2.5 inches up to 5 inches, alongside its standard range from 8mm, in round, hexagonal, square and flat profile.

The value of cold drawing over hot rolling or machining from black bar is straightforward for anyone cutting stems and trim: tighter dimensional tolerance and a smoother surface finish straight off the drawbench, with improved mechanical properties from the cold working itself. For components such as stems in Duplex 31803/32205, Super Duplex 32760 or Alloy K500, where surface integrity and dimensional accuracy feed directly into sealing performance and actuation life, that head start means less material removed on the lathe and fewer finishing passes before a part is ready for assembly.

OSS became part of the Langley Alloys group in March 2026, adding cold-drawn bar processing to a group that already covers melt, stockholding, piping, inspection and CNC machining, giving valve manufacturers a shorter route from mill to finished component. The company holds around 1,000 tonnes of cold-drawn stock ready for immediate delivery, with access to a further 3,000 tonnes of stainless, duplex, super duplex and nickel alloy grades across the wider group.

For valve manufacturers weighing up stem and trim sourcing, the story here is dimensional accuracy at larger diameters, backed by group-level stock depth, less time spent machining down oversize bar, and one fewer supplier to manage between raw material and finished parts.
