BVAA Hot Spot ISO DIS 10497 Testing of Valves - Fire Type Testing Requirements

What is it?

This is a proposed revision to one of the core fire test standards that has now reached the draft standard ballot stage. The main changes are to:

• Make the monitoring of cavity pressure during testing for double-seated valves mandatory; tests to previous editions are acceptable if supported by a supplementary overpressure cavity test to demonstrate relief performance;
• Allow qualification of valves with more than one obturator (a qualified assembly is where all obturators have been qualified singly);
• Clarify and update the qualification of other valves by “materials of construction” and inclusion of a new “design” clause.

Why is it Important?
Fire testing is a significant and expensive element of valve qualification. Many manufacturers will have a legacy of many years of fire tests already performed. Substantial costs could be incurred if these have to be repeated due to changes in the requirements. If any BVAA members have any comments, or would like to participate in discussions by joining the BVAA Fire Test TEG, please contact the BVAA secretariat before 16-07-21.

Supersedes
When changes are finalised, ISO 10497:2010 will be replaced.
