Hot Spot - prEN 15714-3 Pneumatic Part Turn Actuators and prEN 15714-6 Hydraulic Linear Actuators- Basic Requirements

What is it?
CEN TC/69 has submitted two draft actuator standards for CEN enquiry.

1. prEN15714-3 Pneumatic Part-turn Actuators for Industrial Valves- Basic Requirements
This document will supersede the existing EN 15714-3:2009 standard covering basic requirements for pneumatic part-turn valve actuators, both double acting and single acting, used for on-off and modulating control duties. It also includes guidelines, recommendations and methods for enclosure and corrosion protection, control and testing.

It does not apply to pneumatic actuators which are integral parts of control valves and to pneumatic actuators designed for permanent immersion in fresh or sea water.

2. prEN15714-6 Hydraulic Linear Actuators for Industrial Valves- Basic Requirements
This new draft standard in the EN 15714 series of actuator standards provides basic requirements for piston type hydraulic linear actuators, both double and single acting, used for on-off and modulating control duties. It includes criteria, methods and guidelines for design, qualification, corrosion protection, control and testing.

It does not apply to hydraulic actuators which are integral parts of control valves.

Why is it Important?
These new standards are likely to be important to actuator and valve manufacturers who supply their own part-turn pneumatic or linear hydraulic actuators for both on / off and control applications.

1. prEN15714-3 Pneumatic Part-turn Actuators for Industrial Valves- Basic Requirements
The main changes proposed to the 2009 edition are the inclusion of additional terms and definitions, improvement of the designation of on-off and modulating duty classification and a new clause on motive energy. Changes have also been made to the basic design requirements and type testing and production control aspects of conformity assessment.

2. prEN15714-6 Hydraulic Linear Actuators for Industrial Valves- Basic Requirements
This new standard specifies standardisation requirements for all aspects of linear hydraulic actuators with a similar scope to other parts of the EN15714 series. It is important that manufacturers of these actuators review the proposed requirements with a view to understanding the implications on their existing products whilst it is in the early stages of drafting.

Supersedes
EN 15714-3 2009 will be superseded by the new edition. EN 15714-6 is the first edition of a new standard.
