Hot Spot - BS EN 12516-2:2014+A1:2021 Shell Design Strength - Calculation Method Published

What is it?

An amendment to BS EN 12516-2:2014 the EN design standard covering Shell design strength by calculation has been published and is now available to purchase. As is usually the case, the amendment contains several corrections and minor editorial changes to the 2014 edition, along with several updates to the normative references, including the addition of EN 16668- Requirements and testing for metallic valves as pressure accessories as a normative reference.

The 2014 edition of this standard is currently listed as a Harmonized Standard to the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) and a Designated Standard to the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations PE(S)R for UKCA marking, so it is likely that this amendment will also be adopted by the EU and UK.

The most significant aspect of the amendment for members are the changes made to Annex ZA which defines the relationship of the standard to the essential safety requirements (ESRs) of the PED. Following a detailed review by the EU HAS Consultant to align the standard with current EU requirements, this Annex has been significantly modified to reduce the number of ESRs to which BS EN 12516-2 provides a presumption of conformity.

Why is it Important?

BS EN 12516-2 is an important design standard used to perform valve shell strength design calculations consequently, it is commonly used by members to demonstrate compliance with PED and PE(S)R regulations and referenced in design documentation. The publication of this amendment has reduced the extent to which BS EN 12516-2:2014+A1:2021 can be used to satisfy these requirements. Therefore, it may be necessary for members to amend existing product technical documentation to demonstrate product compliance with all ESRs of the PED and so maintain compliance with the PED and PE(S)R.

It is strongly recommended that all members who reference BS EN 12516-2 in their technical documentation carefully review this latest amendment to ensure that any necessary changes required as a result of this amendment are identified.

Supersedes

BS EN 12516-2:2014+A1:2021 supersedes BS EN 12516:2014.

Continuous Improvement
