Hot Spot ISO 10497:2022 Fire type-testing requirements published

What is it?

ISO 10497:2022 Fire type-testing requirements for valves has now been published by ISO and is available for purchase.

This fourth edition of the standard covers the requirements and method for evaluating the performance of valves when they are exposed to specified fire conditions. The performance requirements establish limits of acceptability of a valve, regardless of size, material or pressure rating.

Why is it Important?

Several changes have been made in the fourth edition of the standard some of which maintain alignment with the newly revised API 607 eighth edition covering fire testing of quarter turn valves with non-metallic seating. A good correlation between these two standards is important to allow manufacturers to control costs by qualifying to both standards through a single fire test.

Changes in the fourth edition include:

• Clarification of the importance of monitoring cavity pressure during testing for double-seated valves.
• Requirements for testing of valves with more than one obturator.
• Updated rules for the qualification of other valves by “materials of construction” and inclusion of a new “design” clause.

It is recommended that all manufacturers of valves intended for use on fire safe applications review this standard to ensure that their products are tested in accordance with this latest edition.

ISO 10497: 2010 third edition.
