Total Carbide, a leading manufacturer of Tungsten Carbide wear parts, has joined the BVAA to further develop and promote its range of bespoke Tungsten Carbide products to valve manufacturers and allied markets.

With a global customer base covering over 40 industries, Total Carbide produces bespoke products for a wide range of applications ranging from all aspects of the oil and gas industry from measurement tools and cutting knives to complex applications requiring corrosion resistant materials. Following success at Offshore Europe 2009, the company is in test with two leading valve manufacturers with a view to moving to production orders within the next few months.

With product sizes ranging from as little as 0.5mm diameter up to 416mm diameter and capabilities to finish grind and lap to 2 light bands, Total Carbide demonstrate the wide range of their capabilities and experience. CNC machinery in all departments ensure the latest methods of production are employed.

Total Carbide has recently expanded its high volume wear part production capability following a significant investment in the latest Osterwalder CA-NC II hydraulic powder press for its European manufacturing headquarters in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire.

The fully-automated CNC press enables Total Carbide to manufacture more complex shaped parts with ‘as pressed’ tolerances as low as 20 microns. It also eliminates the need in many cases, for expensive additional grinding operations. On-board robotics and the latest self-cleaning and self-monitoring technology mean production is continuous thereby reducing previous delivery times. It is the only press of its kind in the UK producing Tungsten Carbide components.

Andy Hunt, General Manager of Total Carbide commented: “Total Carbide already has a strong global customer base in the metal cutting inserts market and this technology means that we can grow our business through the ability to produce the more complex designs that the marketplace demands. We can now compete effectively with the largest manufacturers in the high volume wear part market.”

With over 50 years of Tungsten Carbide production and development experience, Total Carbide offers as standard a full range of Tungsten Carbide grades, and special materials can be developed and manufactured for unique applications. The company has developed a wide range of skills in the process of Tungsten Carbide manufacture, offering a total service from engineering design, project management, powder preparation, pressing, shaping, sintering and finishing.
