Hot Spot IOGP JIP33 S-611 Steel Gate Valve Specification Launched for Public Review

What is it?

The IOGP JIP33 specification S-611 for gate valves was first issued in May 2019 and following a recent user feedback review it is now undergoing a full review. The purpose of the specification is to define a minimum common set of requirements for the procurement of steel gate valves as an overlay to API Standard 600, 14th edition. The most obvious change proposed is that the scope and title have been revised to cover steel gate valves to API 600 only, dropping corrosion resistant gate valves to API 603 from this version of the specification.

The purpose of the public review is to allow JIP 33 to receive and consider comments on the proposed changes from all stakeholders. The consultation period runs until 18th December 2023 with a “town hall” style meeting being held on 27th November 2023 which will overview the public review process, summarise the key technical changes and provide guidance on how to comment constructively. Members who would like to participate in this meeting should contact IOGP-JIP33 via feedback@jip33.org.

The revised S-611 specification documents for review are available to download in the IOGP specification development library - S-611 Steel Gate Valves (API) - JIP33 (iogp-jip33.org). Input to the public review process itself is via the IOGP website and requires registration on the organisation’s Jama system. If you need more information on registering on Jama please follow this link Specification development - JIP33 (iogp-jip33.org).

Why is it Important?

The International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) is the voice of the global upstream industry with 83 members including the 12 major global operators. JIP33 is an IOGP joint industry project aimed at industry wide standardisation and cost reduction of the equipment supply chain.

This revised specification will be adopted as standard by IOGP members, affecting the future supply of thousands of valves. Therefore, it is important that BVAA members who manufacture gate valves to API 600 make their voice heard to ensure that the specifications are effective at meeting the needs of the valve manufacturers as well as those of end users.

The S-611 Gate Valves specifications are an extensive set of overlays containing revised and additional requirements, to those specified in API 600, including design, fugitive emissions testing, materials, inspection, factory acceptance testing requirements and documentation. Now is your opportunity to comment and propose changes to improve the effectiveness of the revised specification.

Please submit your comments on these documents online to IOGP as soon as possible before 18th December 2023 to ensure that the revised specifications reflect the views of the UK valve industry.
