Hot Spot CEN to Create a New Harmonised Standard for Metallic Gate and Globe Valves

What is it?

CEN/TC69 has approved a new work item to develop a new Metallic Gate and Globe Valves product standard. This broad scope product standard is intended to update and replace the current harmonised standards, EN 13709:2010 Steel Globe and Globe Stop and Check Valves, EN 13789:2010 Cast Iron Globe Valves, EN 1171:2015 Cast Iron Gate Valves EN 1984:2010 Steel Gate Valves and EN 12288:2010 Copper Alloy Gate Valves.

CEN/TC69 will form a new Metallic Gate and Globe Valves working group to develop the standard which will be led by Quentin Guillard. Any BVAA members interested in participating in the development of this standard should contact the secretariat by 17/10/25. If there is sufficient member interest, a BVAA Gate and Globe Valve TEG will also be formed in order to provide input to CEN/TC69 and contribute to the development of the standard.

Why is it Important?

The new work item on Metallic Gate & Globe Valves is important because it will combine the requirements of the five current standards covering Steel, Cast Iron and Copper Alloy Gate, Globe and Globe Stop & Check Valves into a single document. In the new work item ballot, BSI commented that by including Copper Alloy Globe & Globe Stop & Check Valves in its scope the new standard could replace the relevant parts of BS 5154:1991 Copper Alloy Globe, Globe Stop &Check, Check & Gate Valves.

It is intended that this document will become a harmonised standard to the PED and follow the basic format of EN 593 for Butterfly Valves that is currently in its latter revision stages. If your company supplies any of these valve types, participation in the development of this standard will ensure that you have the opportunity to understand and influence the future requirements for this group of products.
