FOCUS-1: Smarter Valve Technology for the Water Industry

Published: 3rd October 2025 | Issue 101 Share article:

Digitalisation in the process industries is often associated with complexity - but the FOCUS-1 smart meter valve, developed by SAMSON and Krohne, proves that advanced control can also mean simplicity. Recently showcased at the WWEM exhibition at the NEC, the FOCUS-1 generated strong interest from water industry professionals seeking reliable, space-saving, and easy-to-use solutions for modern treatment challenges.

The FOCUS-1 is the world’s first smart meter valve that combines several key functions in a single unit: flow measurement, control, and pressure regulation. By integrating these capabilities, the device not only saves valuable installation space but also reduces the need for multiple instruments, simplifying plant design and maintenance.

Ease of use is a standout feature. Traditional control loops can involve a complex mix of transmitters, positioners, controllers, and actuators, each requiring commissioning and integration. FOCUS-1 streamlines this process by embedding intelligence within the valve itself. Operators can configure, monitor, and adjust performance directly through intuitive interfaces, cutting engineering effort and speeding up commissioning.

Flexibility is another major advantage. The valve can run autonomously, executing control strategies independently, or it can be seamlessly integrated into a distributed control system (DCS). This makes it suitable both for smaller, decentralised applications and for large-scale, fully automated plants.

Performance is where the FOCUS-1 truly shines. With high measurement accuracy, rapid response times, and robust digital connectivity, the valve provides precise and stable control - even in demanding applications. A recent case study in wastewater treatment, for example, demonstrated how the FOCUS-1 is being tested at Siltbuster in Monmouth, Wales. There, the valve enables accurate back-pressure control for high-flow CO₂ injection in wastewater treatment, ensuring process efficiency and stability while reducing equipment footprint.

For the water industry, this combination of accuracy, responsiveness, and compact design has clear benefits:

  • Improved process reliability through precise, fast control.
  • Reduced installation and maintenance effort thanks to integrated functionality.
  • Future-proof flexibility, with the option to operate independently or within existing control architectures.

The positive discussions at WWEM reflected growing recognition that solutions like the FOCUS-1 can help utilities modernise without adding unnecessary complexity. By making advanced control loops simpler, smarter, and more efficient, FOCUS-1 offers water operators a practical tool to meet today’s performance and sustainability goals.
