M Seals - How a Bespoke Spring Energised Seal Rescued a Critical QCDC Innovation

In the race to deliver faster, safer cryogenic fluid transfer technology, one global coupling manufacturer found itself facing a costly standstill. Their new Quick Connect / Disconnect (QCDC) coupler was repeatedly failing at its most crucial point: the primary seal.
Multiple manufacturers, seal variations and countless hours of testing had all led to the same result – seal failure within ten hours of operation. With the project on the brink of being scrapped and hundreds of thousands of pounds already sunk into development, the company turned to M Seals for a last attempt at a viable solution.
Upon visiting the client’s facility, the M Seals engineering team conducted a full application assessment. The demands of the QCDC were extreme: robust sealing performance in cryogenic environments, repeated rapid connection cycles and absolute leak tightness.
An evaluation of the seals previously trialled revealed several issues, including installation damage caused by an inadequate lead‑in chamfer and inconsistent manufacturing quality, including energiser springs with unwelded joints.
M Seals’ solution was to leverage the customer’s existing metalwork, thereby eliminating costly redesign, and proposed a custom spring‑energised seal engineered specifically for cryogenic performance.
The design paired a high‑load spring energiser for continuous sealing force in extremely low‑temperature conditions with a fluoropolymer jacket formulated to resist shrinkage and maintain leak‑tight integrity at –196°C.
Within just three days of the initial assessment, M Seals manufactured and delivered prototype seals. Following the recommended chamfer modification, the seal was installed and placed under rigorous procedures for testing. This involved continuous quick connect/disconnect cycling at –196°C for an extended runtime of 168 hours. Zero leakage was recorded.
Impressed by both the performance and the speed of M Seals’ response, the client requested a second seal variant featuring an angled sealing face. This was produced and tested, again leading to zero leakage.
M Seals helped to turn a failing project destined for cancellation into a validated, market‑ready innovation in cryogenic coupling technology.
Through rapid technical assessment, precision engineering and advanced sealing materials, M Seals can solve a range of sealing challenges.
