M Seals’ KB20-ILS: A High-Performance Sealing Solution

As pressure demands increase across oil and gas, pipeline and pressure control systems, engineers are continually looking for sealing solutions that offer greater reliability than conventional O-rings. The KB20-ILS is a double-acting (bi-directional) seal, commonly known as an Interlocking T-Seal, originally developed for wellhead equipment and downhole tools operating in demanding oil and gas environments. Designed to fit standard O-ring grooves, it enables users to achieve significantly higher pressure capabilities without extensive hardware modifications.

The seal combines an elastomeric sealing element with uniquely engineered, locked-in thermoplastic anti-extrusion rings. This design helps prevent extrusion under high pressures and accommodates larger clearance gaps between mating hardware components. Unlike conventional back-up rings, the anti-extrusion elements remain securely interlocked during installation, reducing the risk of damage and simplifying assembly procedures.

A key feature of the KB20-ILS is its interference fit on the inside diameter. This enhances static sealing performance while helping to prevent seal roll and spiral failure in reciprocating applications. It is particularly effective in static and stab-in applications where components are repeatedly engaged and disengaged. In these situations, traditional back-up rings can be susceptible to shearing or may contribute to galling of metallic mating surfaces during installation.

The KB20-ILS is suitable for a wide range of industrial sealing duties, with particular success in oilfield equipment including wellheads, downhole tools, high-pressure pipelines, riser systems and piston accumulator end-cap sealing applications.
