Hot Spot - IOGP JIP33 S-563 Material Data Sheets for Piping & Valve Components Launched for Public Review

What is it?

The IOGP JIP33 specification S-563 Material Data Sheets for Piping & Valve Components has been launched for public review prior to issuing as version 3. It lists material data sheets and general requirements that are intended to be used by IOGP members which are generally based on ASTM material specifications but include additional requirements. This major revision will substantially expand the number of material data sheets to approximately 155, an increase of more than 50 over those included in version 2.0. The revised specification also now includes martensitic stainless steel in the list of materials that require pilot castings to be produced as well as new requirements for a separate category of materials designated for high pressure service. The revised specification is now available for public review with a closing date of 22-8-21. A can also be downloaded from the IOGP JIP33 website Specification development - JIP33 (iogp-jip33.org). The public comment stage is open to anyone for input via the IOGP website and requires registration on the organisation’s Jama system.

Why is it Important?

The specification is important because it covers a wide range of material datasheets that are commonly used in valves within the oil and gas industry and it is intended that this specification will be adopted as standard by IOGP members. IOGP also advise us that this specification will migrate to ISO 13703-2 Petroleum and natural gas industries - Piping systems on offshore production platforms and onshore plants - Part 2: Fabrication, due to be published in 2022. API is also planning to conduct a national adoption of the ISO 13703 series of standards as the next edition of API 14E.

It is important that BVAA members who manufacture products that are subject to these specifications make their comments to ensure that the specifications are effective at meeting the needs of equipment manufacturers as well as end users. This is particularly important if the requirements are to be adopted as an international standard, with many having a significant influence on the overall cost of the finished product particularly via the amount of supplementary material testing activities required.

Continuous Improvement - Did we miss anything?
