Hot Spot CEN to Create a New Harmonised Standard for Metallic Ball Valves

Published: 2nd October 2025 | Issue 101 Share article:

What is it?

CEN/TC69 has confirmed that it will start work to develop a new Metallic Ball Valves product standard. This standard is intended to update and replace the current harmonised standards, EN 1983:2013 Steel Ball Valves and EN 13547:2013 Copper Alloy Ball Valves.

CEN/TC69 will form a new Metallic Ball Valves working group to develop the standard which will be led by Marco Tornaghi with work expected to start in 2026. Any BVAA members interested in participating in the development of this standard should contact the secretariat. If there is sufficient member interest, a BVAA Ball Valve TEG will also be formed in order to provide input to CEN/TC69 and contribute to the development of the standard.

Why is it Important?

The new work item on Metallic Ball Valves is important because it will combine the requirements of the two current standards covering Steel and Copper Alloy Ball Valves into a single document. In the new work item ballot BSI proposed that the new standard should also cover Cast Iron Ball Valves in its scope.

It is intended that this document will become a harmonised standard to the PED and follow the basic format of EN 593 for Butterfly Valves that is currently in its latter revision stages. If your company supplies Ball Valves then participation in the development of this standard will ensure that you have the opportunity to understand and influence the future requirements for this group of products.
