What is it?

CEN/TC69 has published the attached revision of PrEN 12516-3 for CEN enquiry ballot. This standard establishes an experimental method of assessing the strength of valve shells by applying an elevated hydrostatic pressure test at room temperature.

This standard is intended to become harmonised providing a means of demonstrating adequate shell strength performance and allowing applicable valve designs to meet the requirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive.

If you have any comments on the attached draft standard please contact the BVAA secretariat by 24/10/25 in order that your comments can be considered and submitted by BVAA to BSI.

Why is it Important?

EN 12516-3 is widely used as a type test to prove the shell strength of older products designs demonstrating that they comply with the requirements of the PED/PE(S)R and so it is often referred to in their technical documentation and quality manuals.

This document specifies requirements for an experimental method to prove that representative samples of valve shells and their body ends, made in cast iron, steel or copper alloy materials, are designed to possess the required pressure containing capability, with an adequate margin of safety. The standard may be solely used as an alternative method to those specified in EN 12516-1:2014+A1:2018 (tabulation method) or EN 12516-2:2014+A1:2021 (calculation method) when the product PSxDN <3000.

This draft standard is a revision of EN 12516-3:2002 and includes editorial changes to clarify requirements and update normative references, including revisions to Annex ZA that relate to the relationship between this standard and the essential requirements of 2014/68/EU PED.

Supersedes
