Hot Spot ISO 28921-2 Isolating valves for low-temperature applications

Part 2: Type testing

What is it?

Following systematic review, ISO have confirmed that they will revise ISO 28921-2:2017 Isolating valves for low-temperature applications- Part2: Type testing. The project will be led by Debajyoti Maulic from Velan Canada, and five countries have agreed to work on the revision in ISO/TC153 WG12, currently there is no UK expert participating.

This part of ISO 28921 currently specifies requirements for the type testing of isolating valves for low-temperature applications to verify the performance at temperatures from – 50°C down to –196°C. If members had knowledge of low temperature isolation valve testing and were interested in participating in this work, they were asked to contact the BVAA before the 2nd April 2026.

Why is it Important?

ISO 28921-1 Isolating valves for low temperature applications was last updated in 2022 and it was planned to revise part 2 and bring type testing in to line with the new part 1. Work on the revision started in ISO/TC153 WG12, but unfortunately it ran out of time. The project has now been officially restarted and there were 24 comments raised for consideration during the systematic review process.

The review comments covered a wide range of potential changes such as the inclusion of hydrogen as a test fluid, revised leakage rates and changes to the number of test cycles required, among others. If adopted these changes are likely to significantly affect the current type testing procedure and the validity of existing product qualifications.

If your organisation is involved in the manufacture of low temperature isolation valves, participation in the development of this important standard will allow you to contribute and influence its future direction and impact on current products.

Supersedes
