M Seals’ Reverse Engineering Expertise

M Seals helped a leading valve specialist complete a time-critical refurbishment programme for API 10,000 gate valves by delivering reverse-engineered sealing solutions on an accelerated timescale.

The project involved a batch of valves used in demanding high-pressure service that required urgent overhaul during scheduled maintenance. With operational continuity dependent on timely refurbishment, the customer needed replacement seals capable of matching the performance of the original components while meeting a challenging deadline.

Using seal samples removed from the valves, M Seals carried out a detailed reverse engineering process to capture the critical dimensions, tolerances and material characteristics needed to maintain sealing integrity in service. Close collaboration between the engineering teams enabled technical requirements to be quickly defined, helping to minimise delays and keep the project on schedule.

As part of the project, M Seals also identified opportunities to improve future maintenance efficiency. By supporting enhanced procedures for measuring and documenting seal dimensions, the customer is now better positioned to specify replacement seals more accurately and reduce lead times for future orders.

Following assessment, prototype seals were developed using the KB19 profile from the M-Flex® range of single-acting, spring-energised seals. The solution incorporated PTV-WD57, a virgin PTFE (Teflon™) compound chosen for its chemical resistance, low-friction properties and suitability for demanding sealing applications.

Testing confirmed the reverse-engineered seals met installation and operational requirements, enabling a smooth transition into full production. Manufacturing was completed within M Seals’ Engineered Seals Division, allowing rapid progression from prototype validation to production quantities.

The seals were delivered on schedule, enabling the valve rebuild programme to proceed as planned and helping the customer avoid potential downtime.
